However, bad breath could result from nothing major such as certain foods or drinks consumed. Bad breath could also be the result of an unhappy stomach that is producing too much acid. Dry mouth, often the result of dehydration, is another cause of bad breath.

Gum actually comes with many benefits for our mouth. For one – depending on the flavor – you can quickly nullify any bad breath by chewing gum. We’d suggest mint flavors for fast, fresh breath. We also recommend gum that has been approved by the ADA, which are marked by the symbol on the package. Gum that contains xylitol is beneficial for your dental health in the prevention of cavities.
Drinking Water to Prevent Bad Breath
Water is abundant, yet many of us struggle to stay effectively hydrated throughout the day. Water is a great way to wash our mouth out from any floating debris that bacteria could feed on. But more importantly, it keeps us hydrated, which allows our body to produce saliva at an appropriate rate. This assists in keeping odor causing bacteria at bay.
Probiotics to Prevent Bad Breath
Most of us are familiar with antibiotics, which eliminate all bacteria, both good and bad, from our system often times in treating a bacterial infection. Probiotics are the good bacteria that can be administered in pill form. These assist in offering stomach relief, which could keep your gut flora in check and prevent bad breath – as a result from an unhappy stomach – at bay. You may also feel less bloated and more regular, but further research must still be performed on this.

- Calcium – You probably recognize this one the most. Almost 100% of the calcium in our bodies is stored in our bones and our teeth. Calcium is essential to our structural support for healthy bones and teeth. Any decrease of calcium in your body can lead to periodontal disease and tooth decay. Osteoporosis can also be developed over time due to low calcium levels in your body. To maintain a good level of calcium, we recommend a regular intake of dairy, milk and yogurt.
- Iron – You’d be surprised just how common iron deficiency is. It starts with a non-threatening crave for chewing ice. Over time due to this newly developed habit, you will start to notice cracked teeth. Low iron usually appears in the form of an inflamed tongue (glossitis), bald or cracked tongue and development of mouth sores. To improve your overall iron levels we recommend consuming red meat, liver, and spinach.
- Vitamin A – Saliva is much more crucial to your oral health than we care to acknowledge! In fact, it is a natural protection against bacteria and excess food particles along the gum line and in between the teeth. Sources for keeping a good salivary level include sweet potatoes, melons, and spinach.
- Vitamin B3 (Niacin) – Every single vitamin and mineral in your body have a direct correlation to your overall health. As we’ve seen with other vitamins, they help with our bones, fighting bacteria and keeping us strong. Well, when it comes to vitamin B3, this vitamin helps your body convert food into energy and helps your nervous system function properly. This essential nutrient can lead to excessively bad breath and canker sores in the mouth. If you would like to improve the levels in your body for Vitamin B3, we recommend a higher intake of fish and chicken.
- Vitamin B12 and B2 (Riboflavin) – Avoid developing canker sores by consuming Vitamin B12 and B2. Good sources of vitamin B2 include red meat, chicken, liver, pork, yogurt, and cheese. Now for vitamin B12, improve intake of pasta, spinach, and almonds to help increase the overall vitamin B12 levels.

The infancy and toddler years are an important time for young children as the teeth come through and they acquire their first “milk” dentition. The first tooth usually emerges at around six months, and all 20 teeth are out by three years. The first teeth are very important for the development of the child’s eating, speech, and facial appearance. They also hold the place for adult teeth to grow normally.
But like the permanent teeth, these first teeth are also prone to dental caries. Common risks for babies include excess and frequent intake of dietary sugar, poor parental education, low socioeconomic status, and low levels of fluoride in drinking water and toothpaste.
With so many risk factors, it is important that parents take special care of their child’s mouth to prevent dental decay and avoid dental procedures, like fillings and extractions in the future. Here are a few tips to help with this.
Clean the Mouth Properly
· Clean the baby’s gums using a clean, wet washcloth or gauze pad after each feeding and before bed.
· As soon as the first tooth erupts, use a soft-bristled – child-sized toothbrush and a fluoride baby toothpaste to brush the baby’s teeth twice a day.
· Brush your child’s teeth until age 6, after which you can start supervising him/her to ensure they don’t swallow the toothpaste.
Breastfeeding, Bottles, and Pacifiers
· Infants should not go to bed with their naptime or bedtime bottle containing milk, fruit juice, formula, or any other sugar-containing liquids. They should finish feeding first, and then get the mouth cleaned to prevent bacteria in the mouth from acting on those sugars to create harmful acids.
· After the first tooth erupts, breastfeeding should be regulated, and the baby should not be allowed to sleep while breastfeeding – so cleaning can be done.
· Avoid dipping the pacifier in sugar or honey. Also don’t test the drink by putting it in your mouth before giving it to your baby, as this provides an avenue for decay-causing bacteria to pass on to your baby’s mouth.
· The bottle should never be used as a pacifier, as frequent sips of sugary fluids can lead to tooth decay.
Training or Sippy Cups
· Try to get your child to start drinking from a cup by his/her first birthday to reduce the risk of tooth decay.
· Prevent your child from constantly sipping on sweet liquids, and only present them during mealtimes. If your child gets thirsty, offer water in a cup.
· Use the training cup for the shortest time possible – only until your child has learned how to sip.
A Healthy Diet
· Avoid rewarding your child using sweet foods and drinks
· Limit between-meal snacks
· Give your child sweets only with meals
· Maintain a healthy diet
